The First Three Wooden Forts
The Saint Augustine Historical Society invites you to attend the unveiling of the historic marker "ST AUGUSTINE ON ANASTASIA ISLAND" on September 8, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. in the open field (overflow parking lot) just north of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm (999 Anastasia Boulevard).

Through the generosity of the Alligator Farm and Mr. David Drysdale, the Society is able to place this marker in a highly visible and easily accessed location.

The First Three Wooden Forts by Eugene Lyon contextualizes the importance of this marker.

Book Talkback and Signing

The St. Augustine Historical Society will host James Huffstodt author of Lincoln's Bold Lion: The Life and Times of Brigadier General Martin Davis Hardin at a talk and book sigining in the Courtyard of the Historical Society's Research Library at 12 Aviles Street on Friday March 4, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

Before Hardin and his wife contributed to historical preservation in St. Augustine, the he attended West Point Military Academy and was a front line participant during the Civil War. His service took him to the lesser known Penisula Campaign, the battle of Big Round Top at Gettysburg, and various other skirmishes. Hoffstodt infuses a narrative voice into his historical research in order to bring Hardin's experiences to life.

Mr. Huffstodt will also give a presentation on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, 6:00 p.m.at the Mission Nombre de Dios Museum. The focus of that presentation will expand on General Hardin’s military career to include his involvement in Catholicism and his wife, Amelia’s connection to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine.
